Marine Communications VHF Short Range Certificate

The “MCA ICC 24m Sail, 10m Power Coastal and Inland” course by International Yacht Training (IYT) is designed to prepare participants for obtaining the International Certificate of Competence (ICC), an internationally recognized certificate that certifies competence in operating pleasure craft. This certificate is required in many countries to operate sail and motor vessels in coastal and inland waters.

Course Objectives

The course aims to equip participants with the necessary skills to safely and competently operate both sailboats up to 24 meters in length and motorboats up to 10 meters in length in coastal and inland waters. The objectives include:

• Gaining a solid understanding of navigation rules and maritime safety.
• Learning the techniques of maneuvering and handling vessels.
• Developing navigation skills in coastal and inland conditions.
• Preparing for the ICC exam, which will assess both theoretical and practical competencies.

Course Content

1. Regulations and Maritime Safety

• Navigation Rules: Study of international regulations for preventing collisions at sea (COLREGs).
• Onboard Safety: Emergency management, use of safety equipment, and rescue procedures.

2. Vessel Maneuvering and Handling

• Sail and Power Maneuvers: Basic and advanced techniques for maneuvering both sailboats up to 24 meters and motorboats up to 10 meters.
• Mooring and Anchoring: Safe procedures for mooring and anchoring in various environments, including ports and inland waters.
• Vessel Management: Basic knowledge of vessel maintenance and onboard emergency management.

3. Coastal and Inland Navigation

• Coastal Navigation: Route planning, use of nautical charts, and navigation in coastal waters.
• Inland Navigation: Specific techniques for navigating rivers, lakes, and canals, including lock passage procedures.

4. Practical and Theoretical Examination

• Theoretical Exam: Assessment of knowledge on regulations, safety, and navigation.
• Practical Exam: Demonstration of maneuvering and vessel management skills in various situations, both under sail and power.

Course Structure

The course is structured into theoretical and practical modules, with a strong emphasis on the practical application of the skills acquired. Theoretical lessons cover all aspects of navigation and vessel management, while practical sessions allow students to practice on vessels in various operational conditions.

Course Duration

The course duration varies depending on the format offered by the school, but it generally spans several days, with a balanced mix of theory and practice.

Admission Requirements

The course is aimed at those who already have a basic level of navigation experience. While it is not necessary to be an expert, having some preliminary knowledge of basic nautical operations is recommended.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and passing both the theoretical and practical exams, participants will receive the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for sailboats up to 24 meters and motorboats up to 10 meters, valid for coastal and inland navigation. This certificate complies with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is recognized in many international jurisdictions.

Career Opportunities

With the ICC certificate, participants can legally operate pleasure craft in many countries. It is a crucial step for anyone wishing to sail internationally or rent vessels in foreign waters, and it is often required for captaining yachts in charters or engaging in recreational activities in the maritime industry.
